my computer's clock is always wrong now.

running windows 7 pro on a vaio laptop, fully current on updates

set to correct time zone, set to automatically synchronize with time.windows.com

I go into settings and go "update now", and the date and time are correct. and then after a little while I look and the time is wrong again, as if it had been set back a bit.

the same thing happens if I manually change it to the date and time I have on my watch.

I noticed this started happening when the computer blue screened on me for the first time on this installation windows. I've narrowed the blue screen issue down to an external sound card with a flaky power connection.

mainly use the computer to just brows internet, no other big apps running usually when I notice the time being wrong. notepad, malwarebytes sits in the system tray as well as avast and ccleaner.

computer stays powered up -- time changes seemingly on its own.

Have you tried switching it off and on again?

I know OP is long gone but I encountered a similar clock issue so I thought I'd share.

I encountered a couple systems which, when shut down, would stop incrementing their clock. The clock would stay fixed at the time the system was shut down at. When next powered on the time would start incrementing again but you had to sync to an SNTP server to get it to the correct time.

Solution was to re-flash the BIOS, including boot block. Replacing the battery or wiping settings wasn't enough, the entire flash chip had to be wiped and re-flashed.

So OP could try creating a DOS USB drive, copy the DOS-based flasher onto it, then use that to wipe & program the flash. Windows-based flashing didn't work, had to be done from DOS.

If it works look into locking the ability to write to the BIOS, sometimes there's a setting in the BIOS, other times it's a jumper on the board.

Hard Drive Anonymous 18/05/08(Tue)02:05 No. 22551 ID: 81bd02 [Reply]

I recently bought a Gateway DX4375-UR22. It came with a 1 terabyte hard drive. I turned it on, and it booted up using Ubuntu. Me being me, I stupidly decided to take it apart. I put it back together, and now there is a problem with the hard drive. Everything else works fine, except for the hard drive. The drive is a Seagate Barracuda 1000 Gigabyte. I decided to try it in another computer, but the other one does not recognize it as a drive. I tried putting a hard drive from another computer into the Gateway to see if it would boot, but no luck. The seagate drive spins, but it is not transferring data or being recognized. Can I save the drive? How can I boot up the computer?

Buy dock:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CE65C4W/

Plug dock into second system.

Verify it sees the drive. Remember that if you're booted into Windows that it won't see ext partitions, you'll have to go into disk management to see that the disk is present.

Does the gateway see the disk from the other computer in the BIOS/UEFI? You may have connected the SATA cable to the wrong port when you put it back together, some OEMs have odd eSATA ports on the motherboard that look like a normal SATA port but have to be enabled separately in the BIOS/UEFI as they're meant to be cabled to a eSATA port on the back of the system (but are only present in some models - the rest share the same motherboard but lack the back connector and cabling).

Chan Thread Watch seems to have stopped working on 4chan.

Anyone have some idea on a fix? (Or an alternative app?)

It's still working on other sites. (like 7chan, and p4c)

So, apparantly thunder struck down in the area I live in, I had pulled out all the equiepment from the outlets, except for my router because I forgot. Should I be worried something might have been damaged or would it have shown by now? The router is connected to a switch and two computers. Everythning seems to be working fine but im kinda worried since the ligthning apparantly broke stuff for other people. Also do surge protectors really work if lighning strucks? Maybe I should consider buying some.

Consider upgrading your electrical service panel so that it protects your house from surges.

Surge protectors are fine but they wear out. The service panel upgrade is really expensive but you can get your insurance to help mitigate it

a decent UPS is great for stable power, but rarely is it actually "CLEAN" power. it'll probably even tell you on the back that it's output has an amount of harmonic distortion to it.

if what you plug in has its own switching power supply (smaller AC adapter [not the larger heavy ones that use a transformer], computer, etc), then it should be fine, but anything that actually requires a proper 60hz/50hz sine-wave like an AC motor or something might suffer.

here's a guy talking technical about the UPS mention here >>22144 I believe:
https://www.halfgaar.net/apc-ups-cs-650-review

tl;dr
need need actual clean power? have to get an actual line conditioner.

>>22544
Back-UPS models work the way he describes.

Smart-UPS models always run off the battery. Think line conditioner on steroids.

The downside is that if your power company is shit you will end up replacing the batteries every couple years, because every power event gets either sent to or pulled from the battery.

The upside is they're lead acid batteries that can be bought everywhere and not just from APC. Find a local battery store and the likelihood is they'll either have your battery in stock or you can special order it for 50% or less of what APC would charge.

A couple months ago I got drunk as fuck and stole a Macbook from a frat house. I immediately factory reset it once I got home. Can it still be tracked?

Yes, but only if you run OS X or connect the recovery partition to the internet (to, for example, factory reset it).

That's because iCloud lockouts occur based on the motherboard serial number. When you connect it to the internet it checks the motherboard's serial number against the systems in iCloud that are scheduled to be locked out. If the serial number matches an earlier lockout request, your system gets locked. If the theft was reported it could also be tracked by authorities in coordination with Apple using the same iCloud servers, which all OS X systems will connect to to get OS updates and App Store downloads and everything else Apple.

Safest is to hold down option at startup, stick a flash drive containing Windows or Linux installation in, and use that to completely wipe the internal drive including the recovery partition. Then run Windows or Linux on it from then on.

Source: At my job we've hunted down idiots who stole Macs from us and turned the info over to the police, who then arrested the idiots and returned the equipment to us. Occasionally we get calls from pawn shops who the idiots sold the equipment to asking us to unlock them, at which point they get placed in contact with the police and do the eternally happy dance of minimum wage pawn shop employees who are caught in possession of stolen property.

So, I have stumbled upon a pc-doctor-USB. Are there any kind of hardware locks on them? Or would copying the whole thing to another USB work?
Im not talking about all those free programs, im talking about the real pc-doctor that companies use.

Thank you, thats kinda what I was wondering about. You dont need any kinds of codes or serials to use it. So far ive been using it with my computer disconnected just to be sure.
I guess sharing it online would be a bad idea then.
I have no idea how the serial work though, you can boot directly from the USB.

By that I mean that it can be used by anyone, but I suppose they dont care since they can still find who owns it?

>>

It's possible they sell it without any kind of serialization, but for a product that starts at $329 it's kind of unlikely. I've had $100 products that require entering a serial number to unlock the device before booting the first time. After the first boot it was written to the drive so no entry required.

Do you care if the company who bought it gets in trouble? Its not like they could stop it from working offline.

I would also try dd'ng it to another drive and making sure it actually boots and functions before sharing any images of it. Its possible they could check the USB drive manufacturer code and if it doesn't match it'll detect the difference and fail. Don't want to look like a fool AND have whoever bought it get in trouble.

Does this program automaticity install the update?
or what exactly do I need to do?

I installed the latest version and after much whirring and trashing of disk it told me an update was available. I scrolled down the page and it showed me which device needed to be updated.

So I guess... scroll down?

Jailbreak.

If it's iCloud locked? Return it to the owner and let them unlock it.
