Why are some people so infatuated with Lovecraft? He is probably the most overrated horror writer ever.

He is basically emulating Hindu mythology and name drops 40 000 different gods while building some pseudo-imaginative netherworld where everything boils down to madness and hurr nothing makes sense durr. Pretty much every neckbeards wet dream besides watching anime.

Lovecraft wrote about more than the Cthulhu shit you know.

But the Cthulhu shit ain't bad either.
I'm gonna say you didn't think about what you read. Or you didn't read much Lovecraft at all and you're just basing your opinion on the Lovecraft fandom's behavior.

Which would be a reasonable reaction to them.

His sentences are amazingly long. He wildly overuses adjectives and bloats his narrative with piles and piles of them. I found myself having to re-read entire pages because I zoned out and stopped paying attention.

His works are dry, empty and is the epitome of unfulfilling word masturbation and he is the emperor of endless descriptions that compensate for lack of real story telling.

Oh damn now you've got a criticism there.

Yeah the purple prose ain't up to snuff nowadays. Shit didn't stick to the ages.

But really his works are more about the universe being indifferent to human life. Like there's shit humans weren't meant to understand because our minds can't process it. When you read his shit you gotta look at the content behind the fluff.

It's cool if you don't like his shit though. You're allowed to not like things.

Hipster Slut 16/01/26(Tue)21:35 No. 17521

It's best to get into Lovecraft in his non-Cthulhu works.

Lovecraft is one of the first world builders.

There's world building since forever, but it's usually ad-hoc, mismatched, retconned bi-product of just writing a lot of books. Such as comic books, where Batman has several origin stories and Superman has more powers that he no longer uses than we can count.

Premeditated world building, like Lovecraft was doing, was pretty groundbreaking. Along with texts like LOTR, it changed how we think about genre fiction. It hasn't aged well, and IMHO, unless you're a teenager, it's not worth getting into, but I disagree that Lovecraft is overrated.

>>
Hipster Slut 16/01/27(Wed)00:09 No. 17522

The most important thing to know about Lovecraft and his popularity is that he was one of the first people to do the stuff he did. He said that ancient aliens existed that did not give a fuck about humanity, that humans were not worth anything simply because they were humans, that people lived and died and that was that. There is no heaven, there is no loving God, there is no deep meaning. Space is vast and cold. He kind of broke the norm.

Besides, he influenced a ton of authors. And yes, while a twenty-something shouldn't really say that Lovecraft heavily inspired his writing style, when authors like Stephen King say it (and he has), there's meaning there, because it wasn't some fad bullshit when they read it

Man is an essentially superstitious and fearful animal. Take away the herd's Christian gods and saints and they will without failing come to worship...something else.

I recommend that you read this book. It points out that H.P Fedoracraft probably was autistic, which pretty muchs explains why he writes such boring stories.

It makes perfect sense that autists swarm around his books like flies looking for nourishment since his style of writing is basically endless descriptions instead of actual story telling. It is like reading World of Warcraft lore.

I'm >17521

Still disagree that lovecraft is overrated.

I think it's more of a Citizen Kane effect, where he's so often copied that his original ideas are now part of the collective conscious and are hard to identify as Lovecraftian originals.

People are inspired by Lovecraft without even realizing it's Lovecraft, the same way Kanye West is inspired by Nietzsche, even if he's functionally illiterate.

What kind of depth do you expect from a genre writer of pulp fiction? Lovecraft was never trying to write high literature, but he managed to write a series of stories that directly inspired a whole subgenre of horror, and indirectly inspired a shit ton of other authors.

He doesn't reveal any "universal truths" or other bullshit English Majors tell other people to justify spending money on their shitty degree.

But he's a fucking pulp author.

He doesn't have to.

Throughout reading this thread I've come to the conclusion that you really don't know what you're talking about. Everyone's been saying it's fine you don't like him, but you keep on using the same bait and the same counter-argument no matter what anyone says. You're clearly just doing this as a way to get people reacting to it and giving you buzz and attention and seriously you're a scumbag for this shit. When all your argument boils down to is "I don't like this style of writing" then the truth becomes much simpler: If you like Lovecraft, you can read Lovecraft. If you don't like Lovecraft, you can avoid reading Lovecraft. You don't need me to tell you that. You also don't need me or any other Anon to help you make that decision. But seriously, go fuck yourself.

Lovecraft literature...it is boring as fuck. Not only that its not even really scary due to the fact that it constantly depends on two factors and that's pointlessness and madness.

The mystery starts, they discover great monsters of long ago or monsters are among us and dont even try to fight back cause they are hopelessly more advanced than us even though they are just fucking blobs of mesh that dont really ever do anything unless of course they scale down to our level to cause chaos but whatever.
He also plays with madness at the mere sight of these things or learning about them but it just comes off as silly to me as there is really no reason for this besides that theyre uber advanced and we are pointless, and yet nothing happens. Events that take place are usually isolated to a handful of characters to make it scary but whatever cause at the end of the day the blobs of madness are just whatever and the fear lies in that nobody is aware of them besides the ones who had the experience. But nothing ever happens even though there several of these entities so from now on I am going to assume the lovecraft characters who have these experiences are just that, insane. Yep the the whole lovecraft universe is just a hallucination tapped into by any of the main characters and what drives them insane is its own babble which is well represented as giant sentient blobs of madness.
And that basically describes lovecraft. So the next time someone makes a comment about cthulu I will respond with boat. If someone goes on about azathoth, i will think oh that blob in space that isnt going to do shit and whos form I could never comprehend so why bother.

People feel small. They want cosmic horror to fulfill their constant dread. Lovecraft didn't do that for me, and I have a suspicion that many of his modern """FANBASE""" is just reposting aesthetic-as-hell fanart of the creatures he describes.

There is just no well-written cosmic horror genre fiction out there. It's more of a backdrop for good story anyways, unless it's just jerking off and worldbuilding.

Bloodborne was spectacular, and I think it is telling that it doesn't draw narrative elements from his work apart from the Interstellar Miscegenation angle.

Lovecraft was extremely xenophobic in his younger years. He entertained a profound fear of everything 'other', and this fear of the 'outside' and things coming in from 'beyond' to destroy everything familiar is the engine of his works.
The Shadow Over Innsmouth, for example, is how Lovecraft dealt with his fears over immigration and foreigners coming in to breed with the 'pure American' stock.
No. Really.

The Rats in the Walls amongst a few others which deal more directly with his xenophobia can be a little more atmospheric.
As others above ahve mentioned, C.A.Smith and E.A.Poe blow him out of the water in that department as well.
>>17455
I think people like the idea of an amateur writer of pulp fiction achieving widespread acclaim, interacting with his fans via letters, and collaborating with other people in order to flesh out a universe. I like it too! He's not the greatest example of this, though.
I disagree with the reasoning (let's just call it faux outrage) behind the removal of his face from the World Fantasy Award, but others are more worthy in spite of his hilarious bug-eyed expression and fake wide audience.

The biggest issue for me regarding American literature is that it has no originality or decisively unique features. I think this is due to the fact that American culture and American people are steeped in an unreleting tendency to grasp at novelty, and when you need ever-changing personality traits, you never crystallize a solid character. It's just a huge jumble, a contrived mindset that gives off this vibe of unrest and lack of peace and it is reflected in everything they do.

Also his fics aren't so dependent on the pop culture of the time that you have to keep Googling words and phrases just to figure out what the fuck half of what you're reading means. A lot of works from that time period and earlier might as well be GREEK to a modern american.
