The Rats in the Walls amongst a few others which deal more directly with his xenophobia can be a little more atmospheric.
As others above ahve mentioned, C.A.Smith and E.A.Poe blow him out of the water in that department as well.

I think people like the idea of an amateur writer of pulp fiction achieving widespread acclaim, interacting with his fans via letters, and collaborating with other people in order to flesh out a universe. I like it too! He's not the greatest example of this, though.
I disagree with the reasoning (let's just call it faux outrage) behind the removal of his face from the World Fantasy Award, but others are more worthy in spite of his hilarious bug-eyed expression and fake wide audience.
