the flickr group is an excellent resource for these but not always to my taste:

-mostly dark (some times I try out a tropical island).
-lacking humans (do not want unknown people on my desktop).
-fitting compiz's goldie-locks approach to png/jpg rendering (there's a just right file / (x/y) pixel size).

7chan's filesize limit is too small for three dimensional desktop images :(
