MtG can get very expensive to play very quickly. Packs start at about $4, Planeswalker decks are $15~20, and giant card boxes (or Commander decks) run about $50, unless you get the Basic Lands Starter Box, that's still about $20. What you get in each pack or box is up to pure chance though, just like any other collectible card game.
Prices vary on individual cards and the strategy you want to aim for, with Rare and Mythic Rare usually being the two most expensive on average.
If you want to take a test drive of Magic without paying oodles of money to make a decent deck, I'd strongly recommend checking out Magic the Gathering: Arena (Free to Play) on PC. Even without paying Wizards of the Coast the big bucks, you can get familiar with most of the cards that are floating around in today's format. It sadly does not feature any of the old classic cards though. Only cards and reprints that have been seen in packs from the last few years.
Disclaimer: A new banlist is coming for the fall, so before you invest Wildcards into a specific strategy, check to make sure the cards will be legal going forward.
