trying to connect to irc.7chan.org on port 6697 and it's telling me that the certificate is invalid. use certbot or something to automatically renew it ffs

Just set your client to ignore invalid certificates (some still do this by default). IRC servers have used self-signed certs since time immemorial. This in no way effects the encryption.
