I had some viral problems due to a bunch of malware lading itself when going to a site (strangely not a porn site - the supposedly "legit" site of some iso mounting software)
Anyway I ended up dealing with that through a system restore and now UAC seems to pop up every ime I start just about anything. - from CCleaner to mu-torrent. (oneo of my drives also will not let me write a torrent to it either but first things first.
- Any way to reduce the UAC settings (which are on the lowest before turning the ting off) or whitelist certain files?
- did I suddenly lose admin for this account or what?

Malware researcher here.

Always reformat. System restore is infectable. Malware authors always assume you'll try that. Microsoft themselves recommend just reformatting.

Hopefully, this'll be a lesson: Always use an adblocker + noscript.

You're still infected. System restore won't remove a malware infection. Heck, most of the time, system restore won't even work. System restore exists so that some checkbox on a Microsoft marketing checklist gets checked, nothing more.

Back up your data, wipe the HD, then reinstall. It's the only way to be sure.

Adblockers aren't for blocking ads, they're for blocking malware disguised as ads. Never run without one.

Yes they are technically right, but I seriously doubt you are going to follow their advice. You can adjust UAC settings through control panel > change user account control settings. But, as you recently recovered from malware you probably should be keeping a closer eye on whats going on in your system for a while. Also give process explorer from sysinternals a try to see whats going on inside.

Malwarebytes, AdwCleaner, and JRT say I'm fine (they DID remove some crap from ASK toolbar, and Softonic in the registry. I also ran scandsk /f/r
but I still get the UAC thing when moving files from one HD to another as well as for a few programs. I think it may be a system ownership problem.

You could always upgrade Windows to Windows. So, for example, upgrade Windows 7 Pro to Windows 7 Pro.

As far as CCleaner goes, a UAC prompt when starting it is normal, provided you're running on an admin account. Any time you need to manipulate files in a protected area it will prompt you to elevate privileges, and CCleaner wants to manipulate files in \Windows.

Are you sure you haven't adjusted permissions on your other disk to not be read/write for everyone? Does this other disk contain a Windows installation?

Nope the other disk doesn't have windows.
I've got home premium...I kind of don't want to buy another version of windows7
- and I don't want to touch 10.

You have Home. You perform an upgrade installation to Home. In the process it reloads all the files related to the OS install from the install media.

However you or something else probably just set permissions on your other disk and the rest of your UAC prompts are probably legitimate prompts. If you change the permissions to be read/writeable by everyone on the entire volume and its subfolders the issue there should go away.

Though interpreting "upgrade windows 7 pro to windows 7 pro" to mean installing windows 10... well, that's a new one.

You can't even imagine how relatable it is because I have to contact guys from howly almost every week, the problems I have with my gadgets and something like that happen way too randomly. If I understand you correctly, are you looking for Microsoft Generic PnP Monitor drivers? There are several ways to install them. By the way, you can use this website https://softwaretested.com/drivers/generic-pnp-monitor/. I can explain how to do it if you don't have any experience in installing drivers on your PC.
