Orion Pax, Ariel and Dion are THE FIRST WAVE of NEW DEFENDERS.
Therefor they all get designations regarding their STATUS as being the FIRST wave of new defenders:

Orion Pax is Optimus PRIME
Ariel is Elita ONE
Dion is Sentinel PRIME

All 3 are warriors who are chosen to lead Autobot factions.
When A-3 reconstructed Dion into Sentinel Prime he also bequeathed him the Matrix of Leadership.
(A-3 got it from a previous Prime)
This is the reason why Optimus Prime did not have it in his chest in season 1 and 2.

When Megatron and Optimus Prime did not return to Cybertron after leaving for space (they crash landed on Earth 4 million years ago instead)
eight Constructicons decided to construct a CLONE of Megatron to lead them.

This clone terminated Sentinel Prime who passed the Matrix to A-3 (now Alpha Trion) who kept it savely hidden for years.

The Megatron clone would eventually be terminated himself and six Constructicons leave for Earth after learning that Megatron is still functional.

After meeting Optimus Prime in 1985 again in "The search for Alpha Trion" Alpha Trion eventually bequeathes the Matrix to Optimus Prime.

Optimus Prime was in the company of Elita One when this happened and they both FINALLY learn that their friend Dion was reconstructed into Sentinel Prime.
