What we've been told to call the "communist" world is corrupt and backward, no dispute there.

That is not to make light of China's successes, there being many of them, since Nixon opened relations with the United States.

China was always "at war" with everyone else. They never got over that "unequal treaties" period. They were bullied by European colonists and the Japanese Empire that took after them and they will have their revenge.

They've been smart about it. We looked down on their country for its emissions standards while we offloaded every kind of manufacturing we couldn't stand the stink of on them. They were happy to take on our dirty work: it built their economy, their infrastructure, and our dependence on them for critical goods with unsavory manufacturing processes.

They've raised now three generations of basically two things: propaganda and math. They're into FX, they're into crypto (but mostly to kill it?), they're manipulating the global financial market through the Ukraine conflict, they buy out whole economies with their Belt and Road predatory-loan and infrastructure development initiative.

China has been going through a lot ever since people took advantage of and eventually war with the ruling family. The people who fought for thousands of years to protect China and the interests of the entire region from foreign influence were robbed by their own people and left to die. This last century or so they have struggled through was certainly retribution for the betrayal of the only group they had loyalty to; themselves.

With tradition destroyed, a new void is filled with what China will become. Will it be the industry of Britain, the art of Japan, the cuisine of France? The future will be decided by the vocation they take, the communists are a barrier between the culture and the government. These things should not and will not stay separated with enough time.

I was once renting a house with some chinamen and they all had their lease revoked for being dirty (I was technically in a different property even though it was within the same structure).

Technically, the orient would include asia minor, not just south east asia. Back in the day it might have been sufficient to call everyone to the east of western civilization, but nowadays it's like how brits consider subcontinentals to be "asians." That, too, is technically correct because the indian subcontinent is part of the asian continent, but it's much more useful to use specific terms like chinaman to refer to somebody specifically from china.

Even with "gook" you could run into autistic arguments about its mess of a historical origin. Although at least nobody is going to think you mean a turk or a sri lankan.

My takeaway: gook refers to a wide ethnotype, but is more specific than "Asian" and also less inaccurate, and less dated, than describing non-Chinese as "chinamen" while being equally offensive to anyone it refers to. It's technically the more politically correct term for people of (southeastern) oriental heritage.

Middle eastern is a weird term. I try to avoid it because even if you say "middle eastern" is "arabian peninsula" you might still wind up inciting jihad against yourself for no reason. So I just say "ayrab" in order to assert my colonialistic tendencies, and say "central asia" in order to sound like a geopolitical expert not to be argued with.

It also helps if you namedrop Kyrgystan or something like that because most people don't know where exactly that is, and thus it puts them off balance so you can maintain the advantage.
