WebM Support Added! Sazpaimon ## Admin ## 14/05/25(Sun)10:22 No. 8117
8117

File 140100616628.webm - (1.92MB , 480x270 , another day at 7chan.webm )

Hey guys, just dropping by to let you know that WebM support is now being trialed. This means that you can now upload WebM files to enabled boards and have them be seen and used just like GIFs.

Some notes:
* Expansion works, but to shrink back down to a thumbnail, you can either click the file link in the file information area, or click and drag to the left of the video such that when your mouse leaves the left edge of the video, it will shink. This is to allow for pausing of WebMs. Expand all images will work the same as well.
* As mentioned in the Previous thread, your file must not contain an audio stream for it to be accepted. Uploading a video with an audio stream attached to it will give you an error upon upload.
* Filesize limitations of the board you are in still apply. This is usually 5MB.
* Your file must be no longer than 3 minutes (180 seconds) in length or it will be rejected.
* Files with vertical or horizontal resolutions greater than 2048 pixels will be rejected.
* As this is still a trial phase, support has only been enabled on /gif/, /b/, and /7ch/. As time passes and when we're sure that this is stable, more boards will be added.
* Once again, as this is a trial phase, there may be bugs. Please report any issues you get with files being rejected or not rejected when they shouldn't be to this thread.

Resources:
Naturally everyone cannot be expected to grasp how to create compatible WebMs, thankfully there is a nice tool to help. Check out https://github.com/WebMBro/WebMConverter. It'll help you get started making content right away.
For those more comfortable in the command line, check this for a good command line reference.

If anyone has any more questions, please ask them here.

Enjoy!

I'm getting this error:

when trying to post 4 .webm files on /men/ at a time. They're around 2.5mb each.

now it says, "Please make sure your total uploads don't exceed 5242880 Bytes"...which is 5MB.

That's to low of a set limit for people uploading more than one webm file at once. It should be 5MB per file. Will it be set it higher to 10-20MB for multi-uploads?

It can complement GIF but it's not going to supplant it because it's a lossy format. APNG or lossless WebP are the formats for that.

is there anyway for the "Please make sure your total upload does not exceed 5242880B"

Sorry, the size limit applies to the total size of the files being uploaded. This has always been in place even before WebM. I'll take it under consideration to change it to a per-file thing but I'm not planning on it.

Alternatives are always good but I sincerely hope it doesn't supplant GIF's.
Not only because it crashes my preferred browser but it breaks my viewing flow.
Have to use another program entirely to view my folders.
*Hoping for the rise of APNG*

Please add audio support for .webm
7chan is really lacking in this regard.

I don't see why you can't allow it except for screamers. If someone posts a screamer, then surely we can ban them for inappropriate content on that board?
I'm okay with screamers being posted on boards like /b/ though.

My intention of adding WebM support wasn't for video posting, but to have a good alternative to animated GIFs. There are already so many other places where you can upload and embed video, why would you want 7chan to be one of them?

No, I'm actually asking this. Can you give me some examples of posting a video here as opposed to any other relevant video site?

I didn't think I would want sound either but there are other boards with WebM support that also support sound and it works just fine. No screamers, spam, etc. so I'd like to see sound added at some point in the future.

The main bonus for .webm for me is the audio feature. I can share videos without having to make a Youtube account for SFW videos or a porntube account for NSFW videos.
Otherwise, .webm is just a really smooth looking .gif.

If you keep your eyes on the top right corner, you can see this guy walk up to the crowd and (mostly) vanish. Looks like his flaming remains were ejected upward, then toward the lower left corner after knocking something big and red off the ceiling.

He certainly killed and injured a number of people, but if that was his goal.... why didn't he walk further into the crowd first?

It's almost as if his suicide vest went of prematurely.

What video game would say something like this when you did a thing? I have the most vague memory of a game that would say things like "Awesome two" etc when you did a thing or a number of things well. I'm not sure if it was just text on the screen or if it said it out loud and I remember nothing about the game's content, not even what genre it was.

As there seems to be some confusion with getting webms working, I will go through the steps I personally use. It's very easy with ffmpeg to make a webm that fits in the site/board's requirements.

Just make sure to keep the video short and the video bitrate low. Also, if the video is high resolution, you'll need to scale it down.

I produced this video with ffmpeg, the swiss army knife of video encoding tools in just a couple of minutes. FFmpeg is available for Win (https://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/)/Linux (Check your package manager)/Mac (I have no idea but I know it's there)/Android (I'm sure it's there)/BSD (Yeah figure that one out yourself like you figure everything else out/Everything else under the sun. It does require some minor use of the command line but you can basically use the line of text I used as a springboard from which to make your own webms:

ffmpeg -i danger.mp4 -c:v libvpx-vp9 -minrate 250k -maxrate 750k -b:v 500k -t 00:01:00.0 -an danger.webm

Google what each switch means if you don't understand what this command is doing. You may need to google the basics of the command line to get started, but trust me, once you get started doing it, it really is ridiculously easy.

Extra credit: using the -ss switch to pick a start timestamp in the video, using -vf scale 720:480 to reduce your resolution, managing the minrate and maxrate to get max quality out of 3 minutes of video.

>to shrink back down to a thumbnail, you can either click the file link in the file information area, or click and drag to the left of the video

I'm probably 5 years late in saying this, but this solution really not obvious without reading this thread. Clicking the file link is actually counter intuitive, since that would normally make you go to another link.
Perhaps you could put a "close video" link there instead. I could probably code one if you don't have anyone to work on it. On plus4chan we have the videos load in a big black box, movie theatre style, with the close link on top.

Also not to ape on this but if you support webm you could maybe allow mp4 too (best case scenario is that it's a copypaste of the webm path, code wise), cause way too many sites use it nowadays (twitter for one).
